My proposal details a bike sharing platform customized for a college or university to provide a healthy, cheap and environmentally friendly means of transportation within the campus. The idea is to provide a sustainable system to facilitate sharing bikes within the campus cheaply. The system will be facilitated through a bike-sharing web application and will be available to registered users. Users can download a smartphone app to enable them to check a bike out and pay for their usage.
To become a user, you must register and to ride a bike you must purchase some credits from your app. There will be designated areas where the bikes will be available and where a user can dock and or find a bike. The designated parking areas for bikes will be near dormitories, playing fields, lecture halls, administration block etc. The maintenance crew will be willing trained students who would like to make more money and most of the maintenance will be done in the evening to accommodate the repair crew who are also students. Anyone wishing to borrow the bike and take it outside the campus shall seek permission from the administrators and if his /her request is approved, he/she will be notified of the charges of taking the bike outside the campus.
To check out a bike, first, buy credits through your app which must at least cover a 12-hour lease. Then proceed to check out on the app and it will generate a random code. Proceed to the nearest bike rack and enter the code on the lock module located behind the seat of the bike you have chosen. It will automatically unlock the bike. When you reach your destination, find the nearest rack and dock your bike and press end trip button on the lock module which will make the bike available for other users and deduct the credits proportional to the time you have had the bike. A minimum of 10 credits will be deducted for every trip (equal to one dollar) as fixed charge every time a user uses a bike. For security reasons, the bike will be auto-locking once every 12 hours and prompt a new lease request to ensure no student overstays with the bike without paying for it.
