Home Health Agencies (HHA) provide home care health services. Some focus primarily on nursing care in which a team of nurses crisscrosses a community to provide services. HHA's may face a logistics problem, especially when balancing quality services and profitability (Zikhathile & Atagana, 2018). Hence, they require logistical solutions that ensure optimum deployment of staff with minimum fuel mileage.

Problem

            In a local HHA, they have nurses driving 50 miles one way, and they travel 100 miles back the other way to see patients. One nurse saw a patient across the street on a previous occasion, while another nurse saw a different patient. Suppose the organization had a system that could help plan for one nurse to address such a problem or for nurses to drive fewer miles. It could save a significant amount on fuel mileage, nurses would spend less time on the road, and patients would receive quality and timely care (Gutiérrez & Vidal, 2013). Thus, the problem is that nurses are spending much time on the road, and the organization spends much of its budget on fuel mileage.

Effect of Problem and its Significance to the Nursing Practice

            The mileage in the previous section indicates that nurses in this organization are spending much of their time on the road and that the organization is spending a lot on fuel mileage unnecessarily. Thus, the problem effect is two-facet. On the one hand, solving it will allow nurses to have more free time on their hands, and on the other hand, it will reduce the organization's expenditures on fuel. More importantly, however, a solution will improve the quality of services.

            While this is an internal problem for the organization, it also has implications for the nursing practice. Recent research outcomes have indicated that the country is facing shortages of nurses (Haddad & Annamaraju, 2022). As a result, nurses are burdened with a heavy workload contributing to the occupational burnout phenomenon (Dall’Ora, Ball, Reinius, & Griffiths, 2020).
