Epidemiological Rationale for Primary Prevention of Hypertension
Hypertension is a worrying health crisis globally. It is highly prevalent and has been associated with a broad spectrum of health risk, including stroke, heart failure, cardiovascular accidents, renal failure and retinopathies. Hypertension is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death across the globe (Mills, Stefanescu & He, 2020). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),2018 data showed that about half a million mortalities in the U.S are attributed to hypertension as a primary cause, approximately 50 % of U.S (108 million) people have hypertension, only about 24% of hypertensive individuals have their condition under control, about 45% adults have uncontrolled (BP140/90 mm Hg or higher and hypertension costs the U.S about $131 billion each year from 2003 to 2014.
Nursing Diagnosis:
Inadequate hypertension prevention measures as evidence by high prevalence, morbidity and mortality
Readiness for Learning:
Readiness to learn implies the willingness and eagerness of the audience to engage in an active learning process. Readiness can be seen via facial expression. The audience may look clam collected and show signs of curiosity in the way they behave. The educator needs to focus on audience readiness. The health educator needs to prime audience readiness by eliciting a sense of interest by illustrating the value of the subject matter, i.e. hypertension prevention. Physical, mental and psychological comfort must be created by providing a friendlier environment with adequate physical comfort.
Learning Theory to Be Utilized
The Health Belief Model (HBM)will be used as a social learning theory to educate the audience on practical, evidence-based approaches to preventing hypertension. HBM has three fundamental tenets where it is believed that a person will take a health-related action or change behaviour if he/she perceives the negative effect of a given health condition, believes in positive expectations if he/she undertakes the recommended actions and when such individual believes in his/her ability to impermanent given recommendations. Thus, the teaching proposal on hypertension should focus on the perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, cues to action and self-efficacy.
