(2) Summarize it
(3) Tell how the source is helpful to you in writing the final proposal
(4) Write up the source as it would appear in the bibliography
WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR SOURCE PAPER
First, what to do
The focus of this paper will be incorporating outside information (quotations and paraphrases) and properly documenting it. To incorporate the outside information, refer to the files on using outside information and citing sources. To properly document the outside information, refer to the files on citing sources and writing a bibliography.
For this paper, you need to
(1) choose one of your sources you are using in your final proposal
(2) summarize it
(3) tell how the source is helpful to you in writing the final proposal
(4) write up the source as it would appear in the bibliography
What to include in your paper
Make sure your paper includes the following subheadings and information:
(1) Summary
Begin with an overview, summarizing the source.
(2) How the Source Will Help Me with My Paper
Then, tell how this source is helpful to you in writing the final proposal.
Also, at least three times your paper should include information that you take from the source. Make sure that you include quotations, not paraphrases, on at least two of these occasions.
(3) Bibliography
Skip a couple of lines after the end of the paper and write up the source as it would appear in your bibliography or works cited.
More advice on your paper
This paper need not be terribly long. In fact, don't make it over two pages. And it should not be just a compilation of quotations. As the files on using outside information tell you, quotations and paraphrases only add to what you have already said; they do not make points on their own. In fact, some people find it easier to go ahead and write the paper and then go back and add in outside information.
What I want for you to get out of this assignment is some experience incorporating outside information into your writing and citing it properly. And, of course, this paper gives us another opportunity to work on writing more clearly.
