The research proposal will focus on determining the advantages as well as disadvantages of using personal communication devices among nurses when providing patient care. Personal communication devices including smartphones, tablet computers, and other web-enabled devices have increasingly become ubiquitous among registered nurses working in healthcare settings. Personal communication device use by nurses can be either work-related and non-work-related activities including calling fellow colleagues, texting family and friends, surfing the internet for patient care-related information, shopping on the internet, or playing online games. All these activities, whether tied to the professional duty of taking care of patients, have their advantages and disadvantages. For instance, accessing work-related drug references from the internet while giving patient care is a good thing but it could also be a distraction. At the same time, playing online games while working may appear to be a negative thing but it might also be beneficial in the sense that it helps the clinician relieve stress and avoid burning out.
As a result, the benefits and drawbacks of personal communication devices use by nurses can be challenging to identify, especially in relation to quality of patient care given. Besides, while there are numerous benefits of personal communication device use by nurses, little is known about the impact of the same on in-patient care. This research proposal hopes to fill current gaps in existing literature by answering the following questions:
