Writing a Research Proposal: Reflective Essay A research proposal is a detailed plan or blueprint for an intended research project. According to Sudheesh, Duggappa, and Nethra (2016), a clean, well-thought-out proposal forms the backbone of the actual research making it the essential step in the research process. The objective of a research proposal is to obtain approval from different relevant committees or authorities and request a grant where necessary. In other words, the proposal should convince the evaluation committee of achievability, credibility, repeatability, and practicality. Because of the increasing need for evidence-based care, Polit and Beck (Polit & Beck 2021) contend that research proposals are the ideal starting point for engaging in a subject or phenomenon of interest. Based on this view, the current paper reflects on the research proposal writing exercise. The first step in the research proposal was identifying an ideal topic. This was shaped by the course objective of applying research in a clinical setting. In essence, the purpose was to come up with a topic whose research outcomes could be utilized practically regarding evidence-based care. In the search for a topic, I was confined to several important concepts highlighted in the course: implementation & improvement, translational science, and EBP. Other key considerations included the ideas of research, leadership, and quality. Here, I established a connection in that the three categories interact with each other in producing evidence that can be used to solve inherent problems within clinical settings. In writing the proposal, I was guided by Sudheesh, Duggappa, and Nethra (2016), who insist on the relevance of the five Cs: cite, compare, contrast, critique literature, and connect.
