Michael Anestis and Joyce Anestis address an issue that is often overlooked during any discussions involving guns. In many debates involving gun laws, there is a tendency to avoid using tangible evidence to show the progress or lack thereof of gun laws. However, in this particular study, the researchers make use of data from different states which help to dictate the direction and results of the study. As per the results of their study, the researchers reveal that state laws which seek to limit people’s access and exposure to guns were each associated with reduced rates of suicide. The revelations from this study do help to enhance the strength of the position of enacting more gun laws. With such a direct and obvious link between state gun laws and reduced suicide rates, there appears to be little that opponents of gun laws can say. Another fact that is revealed within this study is that states which repealed any of their gun laws saw an increase I the rates of suicide. The writing is indeed on the wall.

Carter and his colleagues set out to determine whether youths who have sought care in an emergency department reported higher rates of firearm possession. As per the results of the study, any youth who had at one time of their life sought care in an emergency department as a result of assault do indeed post higher rates or firearm possession. The article further revealed that these firearms are not obtained from legal sources. This helped reveal or show that youths are more prone or inclined to retaliatory violence. Youths who happen to be in possession of firearms are also those who have been exposed to violence or have been involved in fights and are thus trying to protect themselves. However, as per the study, these youths should be considered as high-risk and should not be allowed to possess firearms. Additionally, the study also suggests that minimizing illegal firearms should entertain nonviolent options including substance use prevention. These will indeed help ensure that high-risk youths never possess firearms.
