India, officially known as the Republic of India, is a constitutional republic that occupies a large portion of South Asia. The country has a highly diverse population that makes up one-sixth of the world’s total population. Even before gaining independence in 1947, Indian women were viewed as distinctly subordinate and adjunct to men. They were not supposed to express their inborn talents or have any personality of their own apart from their ties to their husbands (Bhat 4). Despite passing numerous laws that give women and men equal rights, the birth of a daughter in certain rural areas such as Kibber is still received with disappointment, and a wife who gives birth to girls in succession is despised (Eswaran 317).
Health challenges women face
Indian women mainly experience poor maternal services, high rates of mental illnesses, and little autonomy over their health. Over 100, 000 Indian women die every year due to either poor or lack of maternal care (Velkoff 3). This problem is elevated by India’s preference for sons, which motivates women to bear high numbers of children in the hope of getting a son regardless of the state of the available healthcare services. On the other hand, mental health accounts for 41.9% of all illnesses that Indian women suffer from (Malhotra 4). The high rate of mental illness among Indian women is associated with early marriages and domestic violence. Lastly, Indian women have little autonomy over their health because their health is intrinsically linked to their status in society. In rural areas, any decision related to the health of women is influenced by the decision of their fathers, husbands, or sons (Velkoff 1).
