Research Paper Instructions:

This project is an exploration of canon formation - specifically, the ways in which some literary works are considered "major" while others are marginalized as "minor" or even "unimportant." You will no doubt have noticed that while there are, indeed, women writers actively engaged in their craft during the timeframe of our course, they have not generally been included in this rather sparse reading list, and they are not often accorded a major place in the so-called "canon" of literature in most anthologies of Medieval and Renaissance British literature.
Your task, then, will be to select a particular work by a woman writer from the timespace of the course (A.D. 800-1774 England) and write a paper that
A) presents a brief account of the writer's career within the context of her time (as an introductory movement; you are not writing a biography here),
B) provides a detailed analysis of one of her works in a variety of manners:
1) in relation to the social, political, and/or religious events of her time (new historicism),
2) an exploration of the literary and/or rhetorical tropes used in the work (a close, text-based analysis), and
3) an analysis via a defined literary theory of that work,
and
C) argues for its inclusion in (or exclusion from) the canon of major British works of literature.
The essay is to be a minimum of 3000 words in length, follow MLA format (heading on first page - no cover sheet), and include a works cited page and parenthetical citations, using sources to support your analysis and evaluation of the work and author. Be aware that the matter of MLA requirements (the header, the first page information, the title, and the work cited entry list, which must consist of 5-7 sources [including the primary source analyzed]), do not count toward the required length for this assignment; any particularly large quotations (especially block quotations) also are not part of the required word count.

Grade Rubric
Your submission must be an original, unique, self-produced work complying completely with MLA requirements regarding both formatting and citations It also must meet all minimum requirements. Otherwise, it earns an automatic zero; any evidence of plagiarism will result in an F in the class.
MECHANICS–You are expected to proofread effectively and accurately. Any essay submitted with surface errors will have the result of a reduction of the grade by 5 points per each instance of any error compared the grade it would have earned for content without the errors. And, yes, commas matter, even the ones before conjunctions in lists. Simply consider this class’ writing assignments as exercises in the correct use of the Oxford comma.
MLA– assumed knowledge at this point. Formatting (whole essay, first-page information, header, margins, quotations [block and internal to sentences corrected for grammar]), parenthetical citations, and works cited entries are all things you are expected to know how to do. Errors in MLA formatting will result in a minimum of 10 points being deducted from the overall grade of the assignment. Errors in citations and/or works cited entries will result in an automatic zero for the assignment with no option for correction and resubmission.
CONTENT
1) present a short account of the writer's career within the context of her time (10%)
2) provide an original, three-tiered analysis of one of her works (60%)
3) argue for the inclusion or exclusion of the work from the canon of British literature (20%)
4) have a useful introduction setting up a provable thesis, transitions, attributive tags to source materials that serve the overall effort of the essay, and a reasoned and viable conclusion based upon the evaluation and analysis committed in the body of the essay (10%)
Any and every source – the text you’re working with, any allowed secondary sources, etc. – must be cited properly per MLA requirements in both the text (using parenthetical citations) and in a works cited listing at the end of the essay or journal. All sources used for the research essay MUST be collegiate-level academic sources. The HCC Library databases or a college or university website (.edu is the domain restricted to colleges & universities) is an appropriate academic source. Wikipedia, Encyclopedia Britannica, and The Literary Review are all examples of INAPPROPRIATE sources for collegiate-level work. If you are not sure of a source, email me and ask. Work submitted using inappropriate sources, per this definition, will earn an automatic zero.
Journals are supposed to be YOUR response to the prompt, using the texts in the prompt. You should NOT be using any other sources for the journals. Yes, sources summarizing the primary text are sources. Each journal submission should have a work cited entry for each primary text and parenthetical citations in the journal entry where the text is referenced.
If you err in citations or fail to cite, it’s an automatic zero on the assignment and an F in the class

An Account of Aemilia Lanyer’s Career
Aemilia Lanyer was one of the earliest females in England to write her literary work between 1569 and 1645. The Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, published in 1611, is the first English-language collection of poetry to list the author's full name on the title of her page. The book's final poem, Cookham's Description, is the oldest known English "country poem," and the anthology also sets other precedents. It was the first English-language publication written by a female member and dedicated exclusively to women, and its volume consists of nine dedications in poetry and prose, all addressed to notable women. The poet Mary Sidney received one of these poems, the author's dream to Lady Marie, Countess of Pembroke. This is the first existing English poem written by a female author praising the literary achievements of another woman (Sharma 182). The collection's title poem, which tells of the Passion of Christ, deals with a less unusual subject, but Lanier does it in a very gender-based way. In their understanding, men who believe in Jesus often turn out to be stupid, weak, unreliable, and traitors, while women are devoted, compassionate and wise.
Raniel also argues Eve's literature points to a critical moment of of Pontius Pilate's execution of Jesus, arguing that men's role in Jesus’ crucifixion erases any prior guilt or sorrow women may have felt at first. On this basis, the narrator calls for an end to the shackles of women and the start of the new era that advocate for equality with regards to gender roles. This has been criticized for its association with spiritual powers, which include traditions of biblical interpretation. The researchers also examined how the authors of Salve dealt with distinctions related to gender, religion, race, nationality, class, and the desire to be heard in public. . However, this scholarly interest is relatively recent, with only one copy of Lanyer's book published during his lifetime, and there is no evidence that it had any significant impact. Her writings were then lost but were found in the 20th century and repurposed, along with the works of many other women authors overlooked in literary history. This is how Lanier's work began in the 1970s, with the exception of papers from the 1930s.
It is unique and unusual in early 17th-century England that a group of prominent women came together to establish a society in which another woman acted as an advocate and immortalist. Through Protestantism's conflicting demands, it simultaneously reaffirms the traditional expectations of women's silence and submission and also allows God to speak in theory, and directly to God to allow exceptions to the general rule of silence. An English woman discovered her voice in the 16th century.
Because her husband's name is attested on the front page as "Captain Alfonso Lanyer's Wife," and her religious subject matter is generally appropriate.
