Bless Me, Ultima
Steps have been taken to preserve the innocence and integrity of school children. One of the common ways of achieving this is through book banning. In the US, book banning in schools is a relatively new phenomenon. It focuses on ensuring that content deemed inappropriate does not reach students. Today, most book bans are not a result of citizen concerns. Instead, they mirror the growing number of advocacy groups that demand a restriction on the type of content that reaches the learners. One book that has fallen into the banned category is “Bless Me, Ultima.” Rudolfo Anaya published this book in 1972, where he focuses on the tale of a young boy named Antonio. In particular, banning books occurs where they are perceived to contain sexually explicit content, racism, violence, and drugs, among other factors. Books deemed to have such topics are considered unsuitable for school-going children and removed from the libraries.
While such a move is commendable, examining its implications to the learners is critical. Firstly, it can deny learners the opportunity to connect with a significant historical event. For instance, banning “Bless Me, Ultima” means that teachers can no longer use the book to connect Latino learners with their cultural roots, even where they make up most of the students in a school (Palmer 5). The ban denies th...
