Engineering constitutes one of the learned and vital professions in the contemporary world. Engineers, as the profession’s core members, must demonstrate the highest thresholds of professional integrity and honesty in their activities. Engineering directly and significantly impacts the life quality of the population. Accordingly, engineers are expected to demonstrate impartiality, fairness, equity, and honesty and be committed to safeguarding public welfare, safety, and health. This essay reflects on New York Times article’s core arguments to establish the key issues that engineers need to develop about their projects to exhibit the highest levels of professional conduct.
According to the article, engineers need to know the ways in which their technologies would be deployed in the market. Within the technology sector, rank-and-file professionals increasingly demand more comprehensive insights into how their firms would use the technological tools they build. Technology firms, including Google, have time and gain and emphasize that they cannot provide complete transparency to their customers in the disguise of offering their product teams the autonomy to innovate (Conger & Metz, 2018). In this way, it can be deduced that technology firms are not committed to respecting consumer confidentiality, which raises ethical questions among engineers working on the same projects. Google’s research scientist, Dr. Poulson, had unknowingly been working on a product code-named Dragonfly, which was to be used by the United States (U.S.) government for surveillance and censorship in China.
