‘Welcome, Mr. Marshall' and 'Death of a cyclist,' originally written by Juan Antonio Bardem in collaboration with others, were released in 1953 and 1955, respectively, during the Francoism era. An era of dictatorship, oppression, and censorship in the film industry. Films were made to benefit Franco’s leadership and portray Spain as a perfect state. It was imposing his ideologies, masking the reality of Spain as justified by the mythologies that distorted the intention of film content and its authenticity. Most films were purely fictional.
‘Welcome, Mr. Marshall’ set is in rural Spain. With the coming of the American Marshall representatives and all the preparations needed to be put in place, women are equally up to the task of ensuring everything is in place along with their male counterparts. They are also allowed to put down requests for gifts and are even out on the street to welcome the Marshalls. A sense of inclusivity and submission is portrayed. In 'Death of a cyclist,' Maria Jose is referred to as a trophy wife. Women are mostly seen as housewives and do not have a place in politics and business. They are not vocal and live in the shadows of the male. Despite the set being in an urban setting with expectations of both genders being empowered, we see men’s dominance and women living in a state of oppression.
