Analysis of "The Cask of Amontillado"

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to show the readers your argument of the theme found in three works of literature.
Audience: Your classmates and I are your audience. Focus on the skills that you read in your textbook and modules.
OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of a literary analysis is to demonstrate why the author used specific ideas, word choices, or writing structures to convey his or her message.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Topic: Theme – Students will identify a similar theme present in three literary works, and using their knowledge of literary devices, their research on the authors of the work, and the works themselves, students will clearly prove the existence of the theme in each work.
Possible Theme 2: Heartbreak of betrayal
Thesis: Does your paper give a clear sense of why you are writing? Does it make a claim or get your reader’s attention? Does it answer the question “so what”?
Focus and Organization: Does your paper focus clearly on your thesis, excluding what is irrelevant? Do the different parts of your paper clearly relate to each other? Does the paper make organizational sense?
Fullness: Do you develop your arguments sufficiently enough that they can be followed? Do you stay with your subject long enough that you convince your reader that you know what you are talking about?
Specifics: Do you make your argument in terms that are as specific as possible? Do you give specific grounds for your claim? Do these grounds make sense?
Mechanics and Style: How well have you edited? Are there spelling errors? Awkward sentences? Punctuation problems? Is documentation handled correctly? Does it interfere with the flow of your paper? Does your style fit your purpose? Is the voice clear? Is your diction appropriate? Are your sentences varied? Is your paper readable?
As this assignment is research-based, content and citation/documentation will account for a greater portion of the final score than on the shorter papers.
Notes: All papers will be submitted online via Canvas/Turnitin.com. No emailed copies of essays will be accepted. Turnitin scores should be below 25%. No use of first or second person allowed in formal writing. Students will receive a 10% point deduction for such use.
A late penalty of a 50% reduction in points will apply to papers submitted after the deadline. The assignment locks promptly on 7/28 at 11:59 PM. No late papers will be accepted past this date.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Length: 3-4 pages: Your essay should be three full pages. You will be penalized if you don’t have this amount.
Required Sources: 5 – 7 (3 primary sources--the literature works-- and 2 - 4 secondary sources) Please note that information from sources should be used sparingly to support your original thoughts and arguments. All borrowed information should be properly cited and documented according to MLA standards. A Works Cited page must be attached to the document, and it cannot count toward the required length. You will include in-text citations of these sources as well.

A primary source is the original document, speech, or any other artifact that was produced during that time period under study. It is the firsthand testimony or direct evidence about a topic.

In your paper, you will be required to have at least three sources. You must research to find these sources. You may also start with a simple search engine such as Google or Yahoo! to begin your key investigation. Remember, search engines aren’t sources; they are ways to find your sources.
Look for sites ending in .org (organization), .gov (government), or .edu (education). Avoid Wikipedia, or any site that allows multiple users to edit its content. It’s a good idea to stay away from blogs and .com sites.
Person: Third person (they, he, she, it). Do NOT use first or second person in this essay. Each paragraph should contain 6-10 sentences – varying sentence structure.
Format: MLA 8 Style, double spaced; include heading, header, title, in-text citations, and Works Cited page. our essay must be typed using 12-point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and have 1-inch margins all the way around the page. Be sure to type your name, ENG 101-W01, and the assignment title at the top left of your paper. You should center a paper title after your heading. (Don’t forget to add in-text citations and a works cited page to your paper.) No 1st or 2nd person pronouns.
