Introduction
When attending culturally diverse clients, the counselor always faces numerous barriers. The obstacles can arise from the counselor’s poor cultural knowledge to language diversities among the client and the counselor. Obstacles to cross-cultural counseling can adversely impact the counseling relation and the outcome of the session. For instance, the barriers may lead to underutilization as well as pre-mature termination of counseling programs by ethnic and low-income groups. Growing awareness of these barriers has triggered alterations in counselor preparation as well as the delivery of counseling services to populations with different backgrounds.
Counseling Cross-Culturally
Simon Nuttgens and Allan Campbell. Multi-Cultural Considerations for Counselling First Nations Clients. Canadian Journal of Counseling and Psychotherapy v. 44 (2) (2010):1-22.
The authors present how therapists attend to clients with different cultures and require meeting their roles of offering culturally competent service. The article assesses the process, states, features, and needs of cultural competency services. The researchers used semi-structured interviews on 13 therapists with experience in the delivering of therapy services to culturally diverse in London. They found that counselors must be culturally competent, ready, responsive, empathetic, prepared, and aware. They concluded that cultural competency should be underpinned on occupational theory as well as realized at the practice level.
Tamara Brown, Clarenda Vinson and Abdullah Tahirah. Cross-Cultural Considerations with African American Clients: A Perspective on Psychological Assessment. In Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans, Benuto, L. T. and Leany, B. D. (eds.). New York: Springer, 2010.
Brown, Vinson and Abdullah (2015) present a good example of how cross-cultural counseling is significant. African Americans present different nationalities, languages, ethnicities, races, cultures, as well as social backgrounds. As a result, mental health therapists should make sure evaluations present accurate details about these clients instead of reflecting their ethnocentric biases. But instruments for the constructs like psychopathology, intelligence, and personality happen to be restricted to those developed mainly on European American thus growing the risk of clinical errors in the case of other groups. The authors discuss cultural issues present in African Americans’ psychological assessments and conclude that therapists must make sure they are utilizing tests suitable on the group.
