Abstract
Widespread wakefulness among students is a general phenomenon that has posed several unanswered questions. Prolonged wakefulness can mainly be caused by acute sleep deprivation or a partial sleep restriction. According to findings, the prolonged wakefulness is more prevalent in everyday life, and its effects have been examined keenly. Both total and partial sleep disorders are known to stimulate adverse changes in an individual’s cognitive performance. Total sleep disorder has the capacity to impair a person’s attention and memory, and also the other functions such as decision-making and long-term memory.
Coping with sleep disorders depends on several underlying factors such as gender and age. Recovering from such disorder requires attention. This paper seeks to determine an overview of sleep physiology in a nutshell and how these patterns have an adverse effect on an individual’s life. Human beings are known to spend close to one-third of their lives asleep. There are two kinds of sleep; the non-rapid eye movement and the rapid eye movement sleep (Sadigh, Himmanen, and Scepansky, 2014). Each of these patterns has unique phenomenon’s that include variations in eye movements and muscle tones and brain wave patterns. Sleep disorders are regulated by an interchange of two processes, one that enhances sleep and one that maintains wakefulness.
Introduction
The quality of a person’s life is conditioned by some certain factors. One underestimated factor is the amount of sleep an individual gets. The corporate world has turned into a twenty-four hours working economy, and people tend to face sleep restrictions in order to make a living. Some professions require night working shifts a factor that affects the performance of individuals due to sleep deprivation. Students spend lots of hours on books and social events through compromising their night sleep a factor that deprives them of sleep (Sadigh, Himmanen, and Scepansky, 2014). In the process of considering the process and effects of sleep loss, there should be a clear-cut distinction between total and partial sleep disorder. Both this conditions induce negative effects on cognitive performance.
Materials and methods
In discovering and making findings in this experiment, I brainstormed ideas that were helpful in understanding sleeping habits on students in my condition too. We tentatively looked at reasons why students have varied sleeping disorders and discovered that the main grounds for this included; stress levels, unhealthy study habits, gender issues, roommate issues, extra curriculum activities, and eating habits. Other scientific reasons to sleep disorders were also reviewed for different materials.
The inquiries that we made revealed the differences in sleeping habits in students. We came up with a questionnaire that asked questions on the subject of our discussion. The survey was given to a section of students with the aim of finding the reasons as to why sleep disorders are experienced primarily during semesters. We also carried out an extensive review of scientific books that showed the different views of scientists concerning sleep disorders.
