Studies have revealed that most students have a problem with overcoming procrastination and this may pose problems in their learning habits. Studies have shown that the problem of procrastination may be difficult to solve since most people do not know what causes it. Procrastination can be defined as an issue that leads to poor time management. According to a study carried out by Professor Piers Steel from the University of Calgary, approximately 5% of individuals were considered as chronic procrastinators in 1978 and this rate rose to 26% in 2007 (Bryant, 2015). Currently, close to 75% of college students are regarded as chronic procrastinators and this affects their learning habits and starting their careers. Poor time management skills cause students to procrastinate which leads to learning problems.
Studies have revealed that almost every individual has had a moment where he has procrastinated and this is a prevalent trend of self-regulation that often leads to failure. Scholars have not clearly understood why people procrastinate, but numerous theoretical and conceptual frameworks have been used to analyze this issue. Not only is this behavior prevalent among college students, but some individuals have made it a form of life. Steel (2007) says that time management is essential in enabling a person to plan and organize how he will divide his time in tackling specific activities. Proper time management enables students to work smarter and not just harder. This is because a huge amount of work will be done efficiently in a limited period of time, even when a person is subjected to tight pressure.
