What is Operations Management?
Operations management has always been a major component in many industries to ensure that the business or organization works as efficiently as possible. It covers the efficient planning, organization, execution, and supervision of all processes involved in the production and manufacturing of goods or provision of any service (Dhoul, 2014; Investopedia, 2016; MIT, 2017).
How is It Defined in Relation to the Healthcare Environment?
Since operations management covers all aspects that is within the context of production, manufacturing or service provision, the healthcare industry also applies the concept. The same concept is followed, meaning that the supply chain management and logistics are the main concerns in healthcare as well (Dhoul, 2014; Investopedia, 2016).
Say for example, in the case of a pharmaceutical company. Operation managers must ensure that proper planning, coordination, organization, and execution processes are done so that medicines and other products are designed, manufactured, and dispatched to chemists, hospitals, pharmacies, customers, etc. efficiently (Henderson, 1995; Dhoul, 2014).This means that it is necessary for an operations manager to understand the trade. Operations management must be interlaced with local, as well as the global trend to keep track of what’s in and what’s not, and which is timely and cost-effective (Investopedia, 2016).
