The primary test of an education system is whether it meets the needs of the students, whatever their background. A proper system should be profoundly established to ensure that students are open to the elements of education they need to fit in today's society. The essence of an educational system should be geared towards guaranteeing students equal opportunities to learn the fundamental contents, problem solving methods, reasoning abilities, and skills needed to meet the times and needs of the world.
Educational Inequalities
Malcolm X was a convict who during his term in prison took the time to educate himself to the understanding of the civil rights of the African Americans. In his view, he purported that schools needed to change their approaches. Malcolm X explains about his homemade education. He tells that with the aid of a dictionary, he taught himself enough words that enabled him read the books that were available in the library. He mentions that he took this opportunity to educate himself (Malcolm, n.d. 65).
Learning for him seemed much easier behind bars than learning in a class setup. Malcolm believed that if kids are allowed to learn what they want, they will have an opportunity to learn more. There are schools all over the globe that are hugely endowed with facilities. However, Malcolm believed that a school district is only as good as its weakest link (Malcolm, n.d.72).
In addressing the issues of inequality, Kozol reports of a trip he took to several schools and discovered that some schools have better facilities as compared to others. He asserts that forcing kids to go to these schools is like taking them to prison (Alieva, 205). Kozol reasons that rather than taking kids to schools that add no value to their lives, it is possible to let them learn great things that they will never forget.
Another factor that causes inequality in education is that between students from different family settings. The reason for education inequality between blacks and whites is the socioeconomic state (Bhopal, & Maylor, 22). Whites are believed to have learned parents with good occupational status and income levels as compared to blacks. These characteristics are associated with the success and the educational outcomes of this child.
According to Kozol, many schools in the States are failing this basic test. This results in wastage of millions of American students that are endowed with different gifting. It is imperative to realize that most students receive education by lack. As stated by Demeuse, inequality in getting an opportunity to learn relates to the lower achievement of unprivileged students. According to him, students from high poverty stricken areas are in many instances exposed to less rigorous content. He looks into the problem of success in school for students who come from privileged backgrounds (Demeuse, 108).
