A Disorder that Affects Muscular System Sarcopenia
Muscles are fundamental components of the human body because they facilitate diverse movements and functionalities through the forces they produce. Diverse conditions interrupt the central roles of this system, with one of these being sarcopenia. According to Walston, sarcopenia is an age-based condition characterized by involuntary muscle strength and mass loss (623). The complications related to this disease significantly impair the quality of life of a person because it drastically reduces their capability to execute their routine duties. As a result, exploring the different aspects of this condition, including its causes, the clinical presentations, the at-risk groups, and treatment and prevention, is important because of its independence-diminishing capacity.
Causes of Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia occurs due to a combination of different reasons. However, Cleveland Clinic indicates that the natural aging process is the leading cause. This aspect remains unmodifiable because every individual’s muscles start to degenerate in strength and mass within their 30s or 40s (Cleveland Clinic). Although the rate of decline varies from one person to another, estimates indicate that this frequency varies from 3% – 8% after every ten years (Biggers). The process reduces the fibers and their sizes, leading to progressive muscular atrophy or shrinking (Walston 625). Despite aging being the dominant cause, other factors also worsen this condition. Biggers indicates that they include obesity, lack of physical activities, declining hormonal levels, insufficient protein consumption, or malnutrition. Moreover, chronic illnesses like diabetes, kidney conditions, and HIV may increase sarcopenia (Cleveland Clinic). A combination of these elements determines the emergence of this muscular condition.
Typical Signs and Symptoms
The clinical manifestation of sarcopenia significantly depends on a person’s muscle loss. For instance, Biggers indicates that one can present symptoms like general body weaknesses due to lost strength, a visible decline in muscle size, and dimini...
