Chemistry in Medicines
In 2018, Roland Barret published an article titled Medicines and Drugs in which it is clearly mentioned that chemistry plays an integral role in medicines (Barret 2). As a future healthcare expert, I have always been interested in knowing how chemistry is involved in day-to-day things; most importantly, my interest is in knowing what types of compounds are used as medicines. These compounds can be divided into two categories: organic compounds and inorganic compounds.
Organic compounds are extensively used in medicines and have been divided into a broad range of classes, such as small organic molecules (atorvastatin, clopidogrel, and fluticasone) and biologics (erythropoietin, infliximab, and insulin glargine). The first class of organic compounds is not as important as is the second class. Biologics are widely used in preparing food supplements and medicines that contain proteins (hormones, and natural and recombinant antibodies). On the other hand, organometallic and inorganic compounds are rarely used as drugs (platinum and lithium-based agents like cisplatin, gallium, and lithium).
I have observed that multiple drugs are frequently given to a patient as part of their treatment. I want to know why one drug cannot be given to recover from the illness.
