In particular, I used two primary keywords, which are “sickle cell disease” and “sickle cell anemia.” Sickle cell refers to an inherited illness where red blood cells are unhealthy and cannot supply a sufficient amount of oxygen to a person’s body. Normally, red blood cells are round-shaped, which enables them to carry enough oxygen. However, an individual with sickle cell disease has crescent-shaped red blood cells. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the red blood cells of a person with sickle cell anemia are sticky and hard, which makes it challenging for them to pass via small blood vessels (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).
