1 Serotonin modulates mood, eating, sleeping, and overall well-being. It is produced from tryptophan and packed into vesicles in the presynaptic membrane. An action potential stimulates its release to the synaptic cleft, and once it binds to the postsynaptic membrane, it can either stimulate or inhibit action. After it does its action, it is transported back to the presynaptic cell, and the cycle repeats. In depression, there is a diminished level of tryptophan, leading to decrease production of serotonin in the presynaptic cell, which will decrease its action to the postsynaptic cell (Bamalan & Al Khalili, 2019).
