On July 25th, 2000, the aviation industry experienced a disaster when a New York-bound passenger jet crashed a few seconds after take-off. The Concorde accident was fatal, claiming the lives of 113 people (Burkeman & Henley, 2001). Investigations by the French revealed that the accident resulted from a runway incident. The Concorde hit a metal strip, resulting in a tire burst. The tire fragments or debris hit the fuel tank, inviting an ignition. Inevitably, the engines failed. The investigations further revealed that the technicians did not embrace recommended stainless steel during maintenance of the Continental Airlines DC-10 that had taken off ahead of the fatal jet (Rodrigues, 2010). The above error resulted in the falling off of the metal strip, which ultimately triggered the accident. It is also worth noting that the French investigators faced criticism from a section of experts that established that the jet exceeded the required weight needed for take-off. Regardless, in 2010, the Continental Airlines DC-10 was charged for its involvement in the accident. The convictions included disregard for proper materials and appropriate workmanship, resulting in involuntary manslaughter.
The resulting loss of lives and resources drawn from the Air France Flight 4590 incident invites the need for recommendations that can prevent future accidents. According to Szczepaniak et al. (2020), aircraft defects result from flaws and wear and tear. In the case of Air France Flight 4590, one cannot disregard the influence of wear and tear that invited the need for maintenance on the Continental flight. Resultantly, the mechanic disregarded recommendations from the plane manufacturer, which included the use of stainless steel in place of the titanium alloy that fell on the runway, ultimately causing the accident, as indicated by the French investigators. Relying on technology is one of the ways of overcoming these flaws. In fact, technology should be a reliable safety measure. In this case, regardless of the mechanics’ qualification or expertise, they can adopt technology to access aircraft information, thus limiting room for error, such as the use of wrong materials, as is the case of titanium alloy instead of stainless steel.
The focus on technology can include the use of artificial intelligence, which allows the relevant bodies to detect any anomalies in the aircraft. It includes recording real-time data that can be exploited to guarantee safety in the aviation industry (Pinar, 2022). The technology will monitor aircraft sensors and related data, including the surroundings, and report any deviations that warrant caution, thus limiting instances of accidents. The objective is to ease communication, including alerting the crew on board and those at the control towers regarding potential issues and how to avert them before they escalate. Additionally, AI algorithms can be exploited to predict airplane maintenance.
