Overview of technology selected: solar singlet fission technology
Solar technologies are able to deliver electricity, natural lighting, cooling, fuels, and heating for various applications but without the pollution. A solar cell’s efficiency is limited by the single junction limit, where photons that have energy greater than the bandgap lose energy through thermalization (Jiye, 2013). Singlet exciton fission basically splits a high-energy molecular excitation into a duo of low energy ones. In solar cells, singlet fission can produce 2 electrons for each photon; hence it will be possible to overcome the singlet junction efficiency limit. By using singlet fission technology, the solar cell efficiency would be boosted by as much as 30 percent, offering 3rd generation solar power (Anthony, 2013). Energy security and concerns regarding global warming have made solar energy a vital topic from the society’s viewpoint. It is notable that more efficient solar cells will result in broader utilization of this clean power source. Singlet fission technology is novel and is not available in the American market currently.
Ideation process to come up with the selected technology
Ideation process is essentially the creative process that is employed in generating, developing, as well as communicating novel ideas. Ideation process includes the stages that are involved in a thought process which are innovation, development, as well as actualization (Luke, 2010). In coming up with solar singlet fission technology, the idea process that was used is as follows. First, the design constraints of the new solar panel were established by taking into consideration the electricity consumption of an average household in America. Right now, most households across the states rely on utility companies for their electricity supply. The monthly cost for families is often high since these power companies are usually driven by profits and they therefore charge expensively for the electricity they supply to homes.
The designers of this new technology sought to save consumers electricity costs and provide them with electricity supply that is actually reliable by offering them a solution that is both local and free of charge with not monthly electricity payments; a solution powered by the abundantly available power from the sun. In essence, this solution would enable the cost of solar power to fall below the retail electricity rates in several regions of the United States between 2015 and 2020 and to roughly 5 cents per kilowatt per hour by 2022 (Anthony, 2013). If successful in the marketplace, this new technology will bring about several benefits. It will create more jobs in solar energy development, reduce natural gas and electricity bills, reduce global warming pollution, and create an additional source of income for households and users who may sell extra solar energy to power utilities and be connected to the national grid.
The design constraints for this new technology are: (i) solar panels that can generate 2500 kilowatts of electricity per annum which is actually sufficient enough for household use and for use in a...
