Research Paper Instructions:

The purpose of this assignment is to explore individuals, organizations, and policies which had an important
influence on the development of the profession. You should submit a 4 page summary of your research of a human services pioneer, social agency, and social policy important to the development of the field. (One of Each – Total of 4 Pages) Please use at least 3 credible sources. Wikipedia is not a credible source.
The list below provides some suggested persons, organizations, and policies that might be researched. You may select another individual, organization and/or policy – as long as you can describe the importance/influence on shaping the profession.
This paper will be graded based on APA Guidelines for general formatting. One of the biggest complaints that I have received from our 4 year partners is that students are not prepared to write college-level essays using APA guidelines. Please review the APA formatting folder and/or any other APA formatting information available to you to ensure that you use proper formatting.
Purdue University has an Online Writing Lab with great instructions for APA guidelines. You can find that here:

Introduction
Professional development has been described as enhancing practical skills and improving the theoretical knowledge in a particular profession. The process of professional development is continuous, and it involves strengthening the capabilities of employees through training and education opportunities at the workplace. Individuals, organizations, and policies impact professional development by providing new ways of thinking or carrying out duties and responsibilities specific to a profession. In professional development, several opportunities are made available to the members of the professional communities, where insights, experiences, practices, and opportunities are shared about continuous professional development (Begun, 2021). The profession of social welfare has undergone significant developments over the years, which has led to the substantial impact it has on modern society. The paper will discuss an individual, an organization, and a policy that has contributed to the development of the social service profession.
Grace Abbott
Grace Abbott is a renowned American social worker who tirelessly fought to improve social welfare for many disadvantaged people during her time. Grace Abbott was born in 1878 and died in June 1939, but her work accomplishments are recognized in modern-day society. Grace Abbott is an important reformer in child-labor legislation, where she helped pass laws that protected children from child labor and other abuses. Abbott’s social work reform began when she became the director of the Immigrants Protective League. In the organization, Abbott led others in protecting immigrants from exploitation by the American institutions and helped them adjust to the new American life. She worked tirelessly to improve immigrants’ quality of life through securing legislation that protected immigrants from being exploited by private ‘immigrant’ banks and employment agencies. Abbott was also involved in devising a state plan which enforced compulsory school attendance for immigrant children. Abbott was also involved in labor movements where she championed better working conditions for garment factory workers, most of whom were immigrants. Later, Abbott joined the Children Bureau Agency, where she developed plans to enforce the first federal child labor laws which Congress enacted in 1916. In 1921, Abbott was appointed by the president as chief of the Children’s Bureau, where she ensured the passage of the Sheppard-Towner Act. The law was the first to provide federal grants to promote the social welfare of children. The Act also provided a provision where the government coordinated with states to promote maternal and child welfare. During her last years, Abbott helped to draft the Social Security Act, which defines modern-day social services in the U.S. Abbott’s contribution to various social welfare programs has positively impacted the social service profession (Britannica, 2021).
