Background to the Research
The world's treatment of ethnic minorities has been wanting, and human rights commissions all over the world have been up in arms. Jocelyn Leung (2010) opines that the world has indeed neglected the plight of the ethnic minorities. The label ‘ethnic minorities' is evidence that the world has even erected a wall to shield itself from certain groups of people. Everyone's opinion often shifts towards issues of treatment of certain groups, but few people get to talk about the name tag ‘ethnic minorities'. Countries such as Russia and China have been in the middle of many talk shows and news highlights with regards to how ethnic minorities are being treated. Tuttle (2015) points out that despite China's resurgence economically, it has failed to make amends in the treatment of ethnic minorities. Russia on the other hand, is often referred to as a multiethnic society, but is one of the countries that have not been looking into the welfare of the ethnic minorities. Reports of violence, racial discrimination, and xenophobia have been prevalent in Russia for a long time. In a 2009 report by SOVA, 525 people were reportedly victims of xenophobic and racist violence, and out of these, 97 died. The main victims of these attacks were reportedly people from Central Russia and the Caucasus. People do not wish to be discriminated, but the lines that have been drawn between people since time immemorial, have made people believe that they are different.
In Hong Kong, a census done by the Census and Statistics Department in 2011 revealed that ethnic Chinese make up a whopping 93.5%, while the ethnic minorities make up about 6.5%. The ethnic minorities mainly comprise Southeast Asians, South Asians, and East Asians. Immigrants keep coming to Hong Kong. However, the ethnic minority groups in Hong Kong include people who have been living there for a very long time.
One might ask, why the name ethnic minorities? Several names have been used to describe ethnic minority groups. They include, black, Asian, African American, people of color etc., and few people have been brave enough to ask questions about these names. Emma Dabiri of The Guardian wrote an article in 2015 where she asked this question: “is it time to ditch the term ‘black, Asian, and minority ethnic'?” This is a question that many people might not want to answer. The tag ‘ethnic minorities' should indeed be dropped. In Hong Kong for example, there are people who are considered as ethnic minorities and yet they are the third generation of their family lineage. This name has been the subject of many debates, and one can categorically say that it has led to more division than cohesion. According to an October 2015 BBC article by Jody-Lan Castle, it was reported that the ethnic minority group in China is marginalized even in the education system.
