Technological advancements have led to the introduction of smartphones as a fundamental means of communication and entertainment. Kwon et al. (2013) note that the younger generation’s increased smartphone use has increased as these devices become popular in communities and educational settings. The authors confirm that their capacity to improve convenience in people’s lives is one of the leading reasons for this rapidly increasing popularity. As a result, trends reveal that young people spend significant time interacting with these devices as a socialization mechanism. Serin et al. (2019) confirm this shift from conventional interactions to virtual ones as an emerging issue of concern because diverse studies associate them with addiction that degenerates into mental issues. Chen et al. (2023) support this observation by indicating that excessive interaction with smartphones and their social media platforms adversely affects behavioral patterns as users depend on these gadgets for everyday routines. The most concerning discovery is that uncontrolled use disrupts fundamental aspects of life, leading to altered psychological well-being characterized by diminished self-esteem.
Smartphone use among young adults is at an all-time high, raising concern about the widespread impacts on their mental health. Considering that the number of young people in colleges and universities heavily interact with these devices, oblivious of the adverse consequences, researchers must investigate the associated impacts on this vulnerable population.
