In the article, Kerner’s reported (2019) a study that was done by British researchers that looked at how certain lifestyle factors like the ‘male’ issue, body image and freedom from judgment determined the number of sexual partners one was likely to have in over 7,000 women and men aged 50 years and above. The findings had interesting correlations among the respondents’ sex lives and the behavioral and socio-demographic factors.
Considering the ‘male’ issue, men reported a high number of lifetime sex partners compared to women. About 40% of the men said they have over 5 partners than 24% of the women (Kerner, 2019). Similarly, being gay was related to having many sexual partners among men. The researchers established that culture socializes all men to believe that they were more sexually active compared to other genders. Also, they felt like they had the permission to be more sexually active or display the same appearance. Additionally, the researchers confirmed that men had 10X more testosterone levels compared to women and so were gay men who had hormonal push for sex outlet while heterosexual couples contended with always discrepant biologic motives.
For men, specifically older ones, the economic status increased the number of sex partners. This was ascertained for men in the top 20% of income and those of the low 20% of income (Kerner, 2019). This statistic seemed odd but it made sense. Rich men stress less on daily necessities and therefore have more emotional space for pleasure as they do not work much like men with few financial resources. On the other side, men with less financial resources can only have many sexual partners as a distraction from the issue of having less income.
A better body image was established to provide great opportunities for the respondents, especially the women. For instance, women who were free of chronic illnesses, physically active, bisexual and white had many sexual partners. Being free from chronic illnesses, physically active and bisexual was not surprising sinc...
