Introduction
Second language (L2) learning has an impact on the first language (L1) writing. Xiangying Jiang depicts that the L2 reading process entails the interplay of two systems of language. For example, when Chinese students are reading in L2, they must have access to L1 and to develop a reading strategy. In particular, English differs in numerous ways from Chinese. These differences include sociocultural and institutional, linguistic and processing, and cognitive and educational (Jia, Gottardo, Koh, Chen, & Pasquarella, 2014). For one to understand L2 reading, it is crucial to know the role of L1 literacy. The topic of how L2 learning influences L1 writing is significant to study since researchers have always concentrated on studying how L1 proficiency affects L2 comprehension. The Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis shows that L1 literacy offers a good foundation for L2 reading development (Jiang, 2011). Fundamental similarities are there between L1 and L2, and they are interdependent. For instance, the reading abilities of L1 significantly determines the reading ability of L2 (Pasquarella, 2014). Jiang's hypothesis portrays that language operations, such as writing and reading, are transferable across different languages. Notably, the Linguistic Threshold Hypothesis makes it clear that adolescents must develop a particular level of language proficiency in a targeted language before they can transfer L1 strategies or reading skills to improve the reading comprehension of L2 (Jiang, 2011). As such, researching this topic is interesting and will provide knowledge on how L2 learning influences L1 writing.

Jiang tested L1 and L2 literacy and comprehension in 246 Chinese college students. The proficiency of L2 and L1 was measured during admission exams.
