In 1957, Skinner wrote the book Verbal Behavior in which he analyzed language based on the same environmental principles of behavior that he used to analyze nonverbal behavior. That analysis resulted in a classification system that allows for the identification of different types of language. The elementary verbal operants originated from this system, including:
Mands
Tacts.
Echoic.
Intraverbal (Sundberg, 1998).
This assignment allows you to further solidify your understanding of this classification system.

It is well-established within scholarly spheres that verbal behavior plays a significant role in different areas of human behavioral inclinations in general (Leslie & O'Reilly, 2016). According to Skinner, "speakers and listeners who acquire, preserve, and develop the environmental factors that activate nonverbal behavior" are the ones who learn language and communication (Cooper et al., 2021). Verbal operants are examples of verbal behaviors experienced daily in human life. The way verbal operants function defines their characteristics (what they are used for) rather than how they appear (nouns, verbs, etc.). A functional viewpoint on human language, including nonverbal communication and thinking, is provided by verbal behavior theory (Fisher et al., 2021). In this vein, the "speaker" and "listener" relate to wide, non-verbal responsibilities. This text intends to define and explore four major verbal operants discussed by Skinner through critical examples and concepts.

According to Cooper et al. (2020), a tact's function can be conceptualized as a verbal operant describe in words features of the surrounding environment. Tact is a verbal operant in which the speaker refers to things and events in direct contact through the use of senses (for example, feeling, seeing, touching and smelling). For instance, if a child shouts "it's rain" when there are sounds of thunder outside, that child articulates and labels rain through the sense of hearing. Because they indicate a stimulation through the sense of smell, the verbal operant described in the table by an individual who smells cigar smoke and thus notes, "I smell smoke," are also tact. A nonverbal discriminative stimulus that causes an individual to signal the smell of smoke is their sense of smell. The Tact repertoire is essential since it educates students on how to interact with their surroundings (Cooper et al., 2020). In addition, it enables students to take notice of and recognize objects around them.
