Biological research of anxiety Psychology Research Paper

Research Paper Instructions:

The purpose of this assignment is to:
- explore an issue in biopsychology in depth
- demonstrate a clear understanding of one major topic in the field of biopsychology
- demonstrate an ability to read and understand biopsychological research
- develop writing skills and knowledge of APA format
THE FINAL PAPER
This paper needs to be organized into two distinct sections, using APA headers:
1. The first section will explain the Well Established Biological Research – this will include
information from the course textbook, and your basic general sources. Be sure any additional basic
sources are from a valid and reliable source, and not a for-profit business website such as a place
promoting their own therapy services. Also make sure all sources present biological research, that
is clearly supported by the research.
2. The next section will cover new Current Biological Research on the issue, that goes beyond the
basics, and beyond the textbook, and has been published in the last 1-10 years. It is recommended
to use the 3 websites on Canvas to find this current research. Also see the APA Draft Example
that is posted on Canvas, showing you how to organize your paper into these two different
sections, and how to outline it all with APA Style Level 1 and Level 2 headers.
Begin your paper with an introductory paragraph, and then focus on the Established Biological
Research that is presented in the course textbook, and also your 2 (or more) basic general
websites. Next, focus on the current biological research, creating a Level 2 header for each of the
topics you are covering. You must have at least 4 (or more) current articles that present current
biological studies. Depending on your topic this may include research on the importance of
genetics, the level of heritability, epigenetics, prenatal development, differences in brain anatomy,
differences in brain functioning, hormones, neurotransmitters, and any other clearly biological
issues. Remember that 7 sources is just the minimum, if more is needed to adequately cover the
topic then use more than the minimum.
The text of the paper should be about 5 pages long - this does not include the title page or
references page. If you want, you may very briefly reflect on your own life and experiences with
these issues in the conclusion of your paper, but it must be clearly tied to the psychological
research. This is a research paper that must always show a good understanding of the
biopsychological theories and research. This is not an opinion paper, so all statements must be
clearly supported by the research, limited to the conclusion, and should be kept very brief.
WRITING STYLE
When writing about the research, stay clearly focused on the findings and meaning of that
research, and do not go into irrelevant details, such as how many people were in the study, or
where it was done. Also, do not cover the role of environment beyond just one sentence or two, no
matter how important it is. This paper must clearly focus on biological facts and biological
research only. And always remember to cite exactly where all facts and claims come from, even
when those claims are vague.
Always use an appropriate professional tone in writing any formal research paper like this. Do not
use the words I, we, you, our, my, or us – this is an informal reflective writing style that is not
appropriate for this formal assignment. For example, instead of saying “I will present research on
the topic of..” write “Research has found that..” Instead of writing “you can see how important
this is..” write “the importance of this research is clear.” With a professional tone “I” and “you”
are invisible, and the research and facts are the focus. Also be very sure to use clearly organized
and meaningful paragraphs – a focused paragraph is never longer than half a page.
For this paper everything you write must be entirely in your own words. Do not use direct quotes,
instead paraphrase everything into your own writing. All information must be properly
paraphrased and also properly cited in APA format. Remember that just changing the words
around is not paraphrasing; if it clearly matches the original sentence this is plagiarism which is a
very serious academic offense. Explaining things in your own words requires a better
understanding of the material, which is why quotes are not allowed. The final draft of the paper
will be submitted to Turnitin, within Canvas, which will check the document for originality.
There will be points off for minor problems with paraphrasing, and major problems with
paraphrasing may result in a zero on the paper. Serious cases of plagiarism must be reported to
the college, which may result in additional penalties including suspension from the college. All
students are required to read and follow all of the documents and explanations provided on APA
format, paraphrasing, and citation.
APA FORMAT, STYLE, AND PARAPHRASING
This paper must be in APA format, 7th edition, Student Paper style, and correct APA format is a
large part of the grade for this assignment. You are welcome to use an APA Formatting program,
and are encouraged to get one if you are a psychology major – mastering APA format will be a big
part of your future academic life!
Clearly organize your paper in a logical way, using APA style Headers to do this. You must use
both Level 1 and Level 2 Headers, but do not need Level 3 or more. Because you are not
presenting research that you have done, you will not be using the Professional Paper APA Headers
such as ‘Methods’ and ‘Results.’ Instead, you will create unique headers that are appropriate for
your topic and what you are presenting.
The paper must be 5 pages long not inclufing the cover page, or the citing pages.

The Biomedical Psychology of Anxiety: Established Versus Current Research

Introduction
Anxiety is a general reaction of an individual to stressful situations, especially when there are several ups and downs in the life cycle of a person. The stressful situations make or aggravate the unhealthy overall well-being of an individual and that individual’s body and mind respond with a generalized reaction. It is a natural reaction and the body’s way to alert the person from impending danger or threat CITATION Webnd \l 13321 (WebMD, n.d.).
There is a cluster of anxiety disorders which includes generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, agoraphobia, separation anxiety, selective mutism, and medication-induced anxiety. Aside from these, stress can also be associated with other mental health problems like major depressive disorder. Unwarranted or disproportionate fear or worry is the principal symptom of an anxiety disorder. Consequently, it results in difficulty in breathing, sleeping, and relaxing, and concentrating. The following are the symptoms of anxiety disorder: restlessness, panic, difficulty in sleeping and staying calm, numbness, tingling sensation in hands or feet, difficulty in breathing, palpitations, nausea, dry mouth, lack of concentration, and obsession CITATION Webnd \l 13321 (WebMD, n.d.).
Research on the Biological Causes of Anxiety
The Established Researches
According to WebMD (n.d.), the causes of anxiety are as follows: 1) Genetics. Usually, more than one or all of the members of a family have an anxiety disorder.; 2) Brain chemistry. Research suggests that anxiety is secondary to defective brain circuitry, leading to the inability to control strong emotions such as immense fear.; 3) Environmental stress is linked to alterations in brain chemical production. Some examples of this include violence inflicted to an individual, especially during childhood, all types of abuse (i.e., physical, verbal, sexual), death of a loved one, or neglect—; 4) Overuse and misuse of drugs that lead to withdrawal symptoms. The use of drugs usually combined with alcohol and substance abuse (i.e., marijuana, lysergic acid diethylamide).; and 5) Medical conditions CITATION Webnd1 \l 13321 (WebMD, n.d.).
The Harvard Health Publishing of the Harvard Medical School elaborates on the specific brain and chemical changes in an individual with a generalized anxiety disorder, which suggests that this is secondary to the undue and multiple activations in the fight-and-flight response pathway CITATION Har191 \l 13321 (Harvard Health Publishing, 2019).
During a confrontation or when dealing with a threatening situation, there is an increase in the activity in the two brain circuits to be able to send impulses to other areas of the brain to alert the individual of the possible danger. Some examples of the stimuli include the smell and sight of fire or witnessing a murder. From here, the sensory stimuli send impulses to other parts of the body CITATION Har191 \l 13321 (Harvard Health Publishing, 2019).
As mentioned above, there are two primary circuits in the brain. The first circuit...
