Clear and operationally defined behaviors are important for the field of behavior analysis for several reasons. Clear definitions are necessary to replicate findings and to determine the accuracy of data. This replication and accuracy are key in providing the field with credible research. After developing observable and measurable behavior definitions, we can take a deeper look at the environmental variables that influence those behaviors and categorize those behaviors in a meaningful way.
There are two parts to this assignment.
Part One: Observation
You need to observe someone for half an hour and identify three behaviors of interest that could be selected for behavior modification. To avoid reactivity, attempt to keep the observation as discrete as possible without informing the subject that he or she is being observed. Some examples of potential behaviors could include:
Observing your child wiping his nose on his sleeve.
Observing a TV character telling inappropriate jokes.
Observing a friend bite her nails.
Part Two: Write a Paper
After your observation is complete, write a paper using APA style in which you:
-Define operationally the behaviors you chose. These definitions should be specific, objective, and measurable.
-Describe the environmental contingencies surrounding each behavior (antecedents and consequences).
-Analyze the differences and similarities between a response class and a stimulus class.
-Provide an example for both terms—stimulus class and response class.

Behavior Analysis
Behavioral observation is a crucial process that provides viable information and characteristics for analysis. The process is characterized by detailed data collection of valid and reliable data for analysis (Bailey & Burch, 2017). Behavioral observation is essential since it determines the key measures that clients should consider to adjust or improve their behaviors. However, during behavioral observation, it is necessary to ensure that the clients are unaware they are under observation to collect valid and reliable data. The paper addresses an observational process and specific elements such as compressive analysis of behaviors, avoiding distractions and linking them to different environmental contingencies.
Operational Behaviors Chosen
The researcher observed three major behaviors. The first behavior is observing a child wipe his nose on a sleeve. The second behavior noted is a TV character who focused on inappropriate jokes. The last behavior was watching a colleague bite her nails. The first behavior involved nose wiping using a sleeve and included removing mucus using the sleeves. It is inappropriate since it leads to different risks, such as the spread of dirt. It also shows that the child does not take minor body management activities seriously.
Inappropriate jokes on TV are also critical since different audiences, including children, may not effectively blend with such jokes. Inappropriate jokes may be defined using different lenses; however, the common characteristic of inappropriate jokes is that they adversely affect a specific audience (Bailey & Burch, 2017). The last behavior is biting nails. An individual who bites nails shows a reduced maturity level to an individual. Nail biting is critical since it begins in childhood and moves to adulthood. Therefore, it is a sign of a demeaning factor, especially in adulthood.
Environmental Contingencies
Environmental allergies and mucosal irritation cause the antecedent of wiping the nose using the sleeve. However, using sleeves is consequential since it leads is a health risk. For instance, it leads to the spread of germs and dirt, which may cause health problems such as viral and bacterial infections. In terms of behavioral analysis, wiping the nose using sleeves unknowingly indicates a mental concern which needs to be addressed before adulthood. Therefore, it is essential to justify that timely management of such behavioral activities would improve the mental stability of an individual.
