Research Paper Instructions:

This assignment will help you develop your critical eye when it comes to reading the literature. The goal is for you to use this as an opportunity to identify the research design and methods that are being carried out by the authors. The skill will serve you moving forward as it will allow you to draw from the literature for your own research moving forward. Looking to the literature for clues can be helpful when it comes to designing your own research as you move forward in the program.
Select two articles from the list below and in 1-2 pages single-spaced (per article ) address the following:
1. Include the full reference for the article using the writing style specific to your program on the title page.
a. Criminal Justice = APA
b. International Relations, National Security, Military Studies, and Intelligence Studies =Turabian.
c. Since multiple writing styles are used within this course, on your title page, place note which style you are using within your assignment.
2.State the main goal(s) of the study.
3.Summarize the research design, and discuss the research method(s) used to answer the research question or assess the hypothesis.
4.Summarize the results of the study.
5.Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the study’s research design.
6.Provide a discussion on how the study can be moved forward. For example, how can the methods be used in your own research proposal? In what other research might these methods apply? Include two we'll phrased research questions that could be used in follow-on studies to the one reviewed.
Format: You should have 1-inch margins on all 4 sides of your papers; your title page should include your name and date; you should use 12-point times new roman fonts throughout.
Things to keep in mind:
Avoid using the first person in formal writing and instead write with an academic voice throughout. Academic voice is usually written in the third person (he, she, it), not (I, we) or second person (you ). Be consistent in voice and person. Furthermore, the academic voice avoids abbreviations, contractions, jargon, and slang. Even informal academic discussions are more formal than casual chat among friends.
The body of your work should be made up of no more than 20% direct quotes.
As you proof read your assignment I encourage you to work with Belcher, Wendy Laura.2009.
Note: In the case of a broken link each of these articles can be found either within the APUS online library or the open web.

Qualitative Article Reviews
Ide, T. (2015). Why do conflicts over scarce renewable resources turn violent? A qualitative comparative analysis. Global Environmental Change, 33, 61-70.
The study investigates the relationship between intergroup conflicts over scarce renewable resources and violence. Specifically, it seeks to establish why conflicts over scarce renewable resources in peripheral areas of the global South result in violence. To achieve its objective, the study used twenty cases of intergroup conflict involving renewable resources (land, water, fish, and forest) from past literature. Seven of the cases identified had resulted in violence, while the rest remained largely non-violent. A qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) technique was used to detect and identify conditions that trigger violence when conflicts over scarce renewable resources emerge.
The cases were selected based on whether they were characterized by a conflict about scarce renewable resources, belonged to the area of homogeneity (i.e., took place in peripheral rural areas of countries in the global south), and took place during different periods between 1990 and 2010. The selected cases happened in different geographical locations within the global south (Africa, Asia, Latin America, Middle East, and the Pacific), at different spatial scales, and involving different kinds of renewable resources (water, forest, land, fish). The key indicators regarding the cases were calibrated on the degree of physical violence (with or without fatalities), perceived threat, high power differences, external appropriation, and political impact. QCA approach identifies necessary and sufficient conditions for an outcome. In this case, it was used to determine whether the set of cases in which conflicts over scarce resources result in violence is a subset or a superset of the above-mentioned indicators.
Analysis of the study results revealed several findings regarding the correlation between conflict over scarce resources and violence. According to the results, a combination of perceived threat, absence of high power differences between the conflicting parties, and either recent political changes or external resource appropriation is a sufficient condition for the conflicts to escalate into violence. This finding is attributed to a high consistency value and was applicable in explaining five out of the seven cases involving violence. Besides, this combination of conditions did not appear in any of the thirteen cases without violence incidences.
The advantage of using the qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is that it bridged the gap between quantitative and qualitative approaches applicable in the study area. It assists in probing whether each case belongs to the set of cases sharing a certain condition or not. Its recent variant, the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, goes beyond the simple in-out set of cases to create a partial membership. This makes it suitable when dealing with complex causal relationships and to uncover relevant context factors and interaction effects. The only limitation of the research design is that its analysis is based on ...
