Your personal mastery plan and paper consists of four parts: your values, vision, purpose and a practice. In your
introduction define personal mastery and explain why it is important to your leadership development. Throughout your
paper discuss any mental models that have impacted your choices of your values, purpose, vision and practice.
There is a list of values in the Fieldbook (p. 210). You may use this to narrow down your values to your top three to
five values. Discuss your values and how they impact your decision-making, choices and leadership. Also, consider
how they impact your vision and purpose. What mental models may have impacted your choice of values?
Using Senge (2006, p. 136), define and describe the difference between purpose and vision. Identify your personal
purpose and vision and explain why these are important to your leadership. Make sure you are clear on the difference
between a purpose statement and a vision statement. A vision statement is a concrete snapshot or picture of your
desired future state. This includes what you are doing, with whom, where etc.
A practice is anything done consistently and regularly that will enhance your personal mastery. Perhaps it is
meditation or taking a deep breath before you walk into business meetings, some physical practice such as running or
yoga, or mental practice like journal writing (if you are not now doing it). You may choose any of the practices in
Senge including balancing inquiry and advocacy, weekly team dialogues, or, something from the list of questions in
the mental models section of the Fieldbook as long as you can do it during this term. Your practice must be a specific
task or behavior you will actually practice during this term to enhance your personal mastery.
Please note you will reflect back on your choices in this paper when preparing your Personal Mastery Update due .

Personal mastery refers to a set of specified principles alongside practices that provides the possibility for an individual’s learning to create personal vision capable of making them approach issues of life in an objective manner. According to Senge (2010), the art of personal mastery is a necessity, and especially in a learning organization. In other words, personal mastery can be used to refer to the purposeful process of living and working that points to a vision that is aligned to an individual’s values and involves constant learning of self and the existing reality within the environment. This basically means living a life that is beyond competence and skills, it demands living a life from a creative rather than reactive perspective (Senge, 2010).
It is important that an individual develops personal mastery skills since it is a necessity for managing various life deficiencies successfully and avoid too much dependency on others for survival. There is a need for individuals to take seriously the art of learning that which is helpful and could help them transform to conform to the changing domain within the business environment. In this case, personal mastery proves to be essential for the purposes of promoting self-development that helps in overcoming life challenges. Therefore, success for a leader demands a combination of personal mastery skills that are beneficial in providing support towards goal attainment.
Why is PM important to your growth as a leader?
Personal mastery is important to the growth of leadership since it helps an individual to understand their thoughts, actions as well as purpose in life. People must learn to lead themselves first before they can effectively lead a company, a country, or any other group. The aspect of learning and acquiring new skills is very key to the growth of any organization. Personal mastery helps an individual to clarify their purpose and vision constantly, therefore, help them achieve the objective reality. The art of self-awareness whereby the leader can easily clarify their incompetence alongside the rate of growth easily helps in boosting confidence and also marks true maturity. Personal mastery serves the purposes of strengthening a leader’s inner stability, therefore, reducing the level of emotional stress as well as anxiety associated with leadership challenges.

This entails the issues that form the foundation of my personal vision. One of the values entails self-discipline which demands that an individual commits to the goals as well as staying on the journey despite challenges involved.
