Success of a geographically distributed team can be fostered by setting expectations that are informed by best practices and the cultures of your team members.

Your company is expanding into a new market and has formed a new team that it would like you to manage. Your manager has sent you this note:
Thank you for taking on this challenge. You have a great team, but they come from very diverse backgrounds. It’ll be up to you to make sure it is a cohesive team that communicates well and collaborates effectively. As you know, at our firm, we feel the management of our teams and human resource management are a strategic advantage for us. I would like you to write an email explaining to me what managerial approaches you will use and how you think your team will function together. Please also include your conference call invitation for your team’s introduction. I would like to review what you are going to send to your team.

Running a global team can be quite a challenge. The expectation is that the team will run smoothly and that every member will feel included. A leader needs to exercise caution or risk developing a feeling of disconnect among the team members.
For my team, there are several things that I will have to consider for it to run successfully. First of all, Canada and the U.S. have quite similar cultures. Therefore, the colleague from Canada and the one from the U.S. will likely have an easy time working together because, as revealed by Hofstede Insights, the two have quite similar cultures. The two countries score almost similarly on indulgence and power distance, with Canada scoring 68 and 39, respectively, and the U.S. scoring 68 and 40. On the other hand, India and the United Arab Emirates have scores that show a few similarities. For example, Hofstede Insights reveals that India and the UAE score quite highly on power distance, at 77 and 90, respectively. This means that their cultures respect the hierarchical order or the top-down structure. With this understanding, it becomes easier to find common ground by creating an environment that showcases authority and factors in the aspect of the strict distinction of authority being almost non-existent.
