Conflict pertains to the disagreement of a particular situation due to the clashing of beliefs or values that may occur between people or within oneself that may or may not cause harm. A conflict may result in changes and can create either beneficial or detrimental effects. If managed appropriately, conflict may result in positive outcomes. However, if the conflict is not addressed, it can result negatively on the individuals involved. In the nursing practice, unresolved conflict between colleagues or patients is a crucial issue that often leads to absenteeism, turnover, and job dissatisfaction. Each organization should advocate for the need for conflict resolution and establish strategies to address such conflicts that can apply to members of the organization at all levels (Almost, 2006).
CONFLICT ANALYSIS
Situation:
I am assigned to the Intensive Care Unit. Upon arriving, I noticed that my patient assignment is quite heavy as compared to other nurses. I was assigned to 8 patients while Nurse X was just assigned to 5 patients. Nurse X’s patients are all scheduled to be discharged during our shift. Nurse X is known to be the favorite nurse of the charge nurse and would often be assigned fewer loads. I grew frustrated knowing that my load is quite heavy and this has already exceeded the guidelines concerning the number of patients to be handled. To address this issue, I went up to our charge nurse but was dismissed since she has a lot to do, and “it just happens.” I grew more frustrated and decided to approach the nurse manager about this issue.
Frustration stage
At the beginning of the conflict, I feel frustrated due to the overwhelming responsibilities assigned to my part. Another frustration was added when I was just simply dismissed by the charge nurse. I understand the fact that I am not the favorite nurse but my frustration is concerned more with how I wanted to be treated fairly in our assignment. As a result of this frustration, my initial reaction was to talk to our charge nurse in a composed manner. My charge nurse might have assumed that I was being choosy. She might have also felt frustrated since she was busy when I approached her and so she dismissed my concerns immediately.
Conceptualization stage
The real conflict of the situation was the difference in the interpretation of the individuals involved. Conflict arises since both parties were not able to know both sides of the story. Each individual has their interpretation of the conflict. Such interpretations are different from each other and were influenced by individuals’ beliefs, values, and culture.
