Israel – Palestinian Conflict
Introduction
The Middle East region holds an important strategic and geographic position in the world, which results in creating conflicts in the region. The major superpowers and developing nations of the world, like the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and European countries, have their financial interests within the Middle East region (Weinthal and Sowers, 2020).
Moshe Ya'alon Argument
The Moshe Ya'alon (Former Defence Minister of Israel) does not favour the Oslo Accords and encourages the policymakers to discontinue this model. Moshe Ya'alon viewpoint supports the land of peace formula and values human life more in comparison to land acquisition. As per the viewpoint of Moshe Ya'alon, territorial concessions can play a vital role in achieving peace in the region (Yaalon, 2017). Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip is not a core problem. Moshe Ya'alon believes that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Palestinian leadership and media have provoked their people against Israel, which is the main reason for Palestinian's hatred against Israel (Danjoux, 2018). The PLO leadership can be solely blamed for planning and creating conflict in the region.
Separation of Israelis and Palestinians Undermines Peace
In the viewpoint of Moshe Ya'alon, the separation of Israelis and Palestinians undermines peace of the region as Palestinians and Israelis should be considered as one nation. The Palestinians economy cannot survive on its own, and they need to maintain strong economic ties with Israel. The separation of Palestinian's infrastructure from that of Israel can lead towards creating a major crisis in the region. Even if Israeli forces disengage themselves from Gaza, the Palestinians will require the economic support of Israel for their survival (Yaalon, 2017). Therefore, it is essential for the peace and economic stability of the region that Israelis and Palestinians should be considered as a single entity. In theoretical terms, Palestinians can create their infrastructure, desalination plants and power stations, but it is far away from reality.
Moshe Ya'alon Recommendation
Moshe Ya'alon recommends adaptation and implementation of a bottom-up approach for developing a long-lasting infrastructure and peace in the region. Israelis should incorporate logical thinking in their policies for making progress towards establishing peace in the region (Mana et al., 2019). The first recommendation for adopting a bottom-up approach is providing support to the Palestinians in developing a robust infrastructure and achieving economic growth. Multiple industrial zones should be established in Gaza and West Bank in order to support the Palestinian economy (Yaalon, 2017). The Palestinians and Israelis should work on joint venture projects for maintaining economic stability in the region. Palestinian grid and power stations need to be developed in Jenin, and the production capacity of current power stations present in Gaza needs to be enhanced.
