Victorian times refer to the period when Queen Victoria ruled England from 1837 to 1901. During this period the society was divided into different categories which led to classism. The mode of the division was basically economic and social status. The society was thus divided into the upper class, middle class, and the working class.
The upper class comprised of the nobility, people who held titles such as dukes, nobles and other wealthy families who worked in the Victorian courts. The upper class was in privileged positions commanding both power and better living conditions. They were the elite class and were referred to as the Aristocrats and the Landed Gentry. They inherited lands measuring thousands of acres and their income came from the rental of their property. The upper class was a royal class by inheritance and most of these people did not actually work since their families had accumulated a lot of wealth over several generations.However, a few of the upper class managed large industries like shipping and mining. Education wise those from the upper class got the best education since they could procure the best tutors and could also afford the luxuries present in England and even importing from Europe. These families lived comfortably together with their servants in the countryside. The land was usually passed on as an inheritance to the first son. This is because the first son was supposed to take up important positions of leadership, something influential but not with the aim of generating income.
