Air Conditioners Pump Thermal Energy From Cold To Hot
The lab component of your High School Physics class will be a research paper. You are to write
an essay on the following topic:
While air conditioners pump thermal energy from cold to hot, they still follow the same process
as thermal energy transfer. Explain, in detail, how an air conditioner works, and the strengths and
limitations of the process it uses. Also, compare and discuss the following two statements:
• It is impossible to construct a device which operates on a cycle and produced no other
effect than the transfer of heat from a cooler body to a hotter body.
• No heat engine operating between two heat reservoirs can be more efficient than a
reversible heat engine operating between the same two reservoirs.
This essay must be a minimum of 1500 words. That is roughly 3 pages, single spaced. It must be
Times New Roman, 1.5 spaced, with numbered pages, 12-point font. You must also include a
Works Cited page and cite your sources. Both must be done in MLA format. You must have a
minimum of 5 sources, and each source must be cited at least once.

Introduction
The functioning of an air condition follows a thermodynamic cycle known as the refrigeration cycle. The cycles work in such a way that it absorbs and releases heat by the state and pressure of the refrigerant. The air conditioner has a basic process of operation: it absorbs the heat inside the building and releases it outside. The basic functioning applies to air conditioners that are split systems or air-source. The split system refers to a refrigerant that has one unit inside the house and the other unit on the outside. On the other hand, an air source system is one where the heat absorbed is dumped outside. This paper is going to discuss systems that will transfer energy from cold to hot. For example, there are ground-source or water-source systems that transfer the absorbed heat in the ground or in water respectively. In a simple case scenario, the inside unit is normally located in strategic positions such as a closet or basement. The outside unit is usually found at the back of buildings. Therefore, there are different refrigerants that work different but deliver the same result.
The machine was a fascinating invention because of various reason. The machine was relatively affordable, available, and was safe for use in homes and offices. Many people developed interest and shared their satisfaction with the device. The physics behind air conditioning goes back to 1877 when the first reliable system was developed. The need for refrigeration was the main driving force for the invention and advancement. People needed the device for storage facilities where huge chunks of meat and other foodstuffs would not go bad. However, the 19th century was only able to produce a bulky and inefficient system. The systems were bulky because they had low speeds of rotation and compressors and expanders that reciprocated. As a result, there were numerous developments that lead to the creation of vapor compressor systems. Modern-day refrigeration devices have efficient rotary compressors and gas turbines; the bulkiness of the refrigerants has been significantly reduced by the rotary machines.
The actual result of a refrigerator is known as the refrigeration load. Refrigeration load from cold to hot: when the temperature inside the building is lower than that outside, then the heat is bound to flow out naturally through the processes of radiation, convection, and radiation. Furthermore, during the process of heat transfer, there are always leakages through ventilation. This implies that the system should be able to handle an additional removal of heat. When you place items inside the house, the temperature around becomes lower than that of the surrounding. Therefore, there is a need to maintain a certain desired temperature. This means that the extra heat must be transfer; the extra amount of heat transferred is known as refrigeration load. Hence, a refrigerant has several heat sources;
* Air leakage and ventilation
* Product heat
* Heat transmission
* Miscellaneous sources
The working of an air conditioner begins from the heat pump. This is a system that operates in endless cycles. Heat is removed from a body with low tempe...
