E-commerce is the exchange of goods and services over the internet. It is notable that many companies and consumers today use the internet for their daily business transactions. For instance, Lai (2014) reveals that the sales amount from e-commerce was expected to hit a $ 1.3 trillion mark in 2013 after reaching a $ 1 trillion mark in 2012. This reveals that the number of people who are using the internet for their daily business activities is increasing, implying the public should be educated on e-commerce. This owes to the reality that conducting business over the internet is associated with deficits such as network communication security and software security. Specifically, the public would be in a better position to control for the deficits mentioned before, if it is well educated on the subject. It is why this paper discusses security measures used in e-commerce.
To begin with, it is crucial to highlight that e-commerce transactions pass through various channels that aim at ascertaining the security of any business transaction via the internet. This owes to the reality that Zhu (2013) reveals that a security transaction goes through the following channels: identity verification of involved parties, command encryption, data transmission, checking the integrity of data involved, and preventing any party from denying a business partner the trading results. Critical to the discussion is the fact that the aforementioned measures are maintained, not individually, but as a whole. It is because the security sockets layer and the secure electronic transfer protocol ensure that all the measures mentioned above are maintained. . Nonetheless, there are additional user defined measures, which could be used by individual entities to improve the security of e-commerce. All these security measures are discussed in the paragraphs below.
It is imperative to note that issues on data integrity, identity verification, data encryption, and denial of trading results are protected by e-commerce security protocols such as the secure sockets layer and the secure electronic transaction protocol. For instance, the secure sockets layer (SSL) is a security measure because it ensures a connection is private, by providing authentication, private checks, and integrity. Critical to the discussion is the fact that authentication confirms identity, encryption prevents unauthorized users from accessing information, and integrity confirms that an unauthorized system or person cannot alter information. It is also notable that the emergence of credit cards forced banks to develop a security system that worked just like the credit card.
