In this part of the course, I had the opportunity of interviewing Catherine Shirk, a senior staff nurse at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. She has more than five years of experience as a nurse and a top nurse staff. She was one of the best to have chosen due to her popularity in the hospital and the standards of the hospital too. Among my ideas was to interview a nurse who has the experience of having worked in a popular health center and come across challenges of patient’s population, among other challenges. It meant to me that I was going to acquire more experience in the few hour’s session. The paper is based on shadow experience from a healthcare quality improvement professional in real-time settings.
Shadowing
The three-hour interview on zoom, which was off duty, was preceded by some chattering about the time off duty. Getting the best and most useful answers from a profession requires precision in the questions one asks them. Staging the best medium of interviewing was vital, so I had to ask her if she could have a few hours for an interview I was conducting for my study experience. Sometimes professionals are not the best to be engaged in interviews since, due to the levels of knowledge, they tend to ‘over respond’ to a question that may misappropriate the interview. Hence, I had printed out few interview questions. Examples of the questions were:
* Describe the gap that could be existing if your position did not exist.
* How do you conduct quality assessment and improvement initiatives?
* What inspiration can you give to a nurse aspiring to hold a similar position?
* Is it too much work to do?
To understand the position of a senior staff nurse, I conducted evidence-based research. It was focused on understanding the role of a Senior Staff Nurse in a healthcare center and come up with appropriate interview questions specific to that position. In addition, during the shadowing, I tried to understand what mentality such a professional possess that makes her indispensable.
Educational Background and Work Experience
Shirk is a bachelor's degree holder at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn in Registered Nursing. She had a pre-nursing study in Borough of Manhattan Community College and Kingsborough Community College. Also, possess a C.N.A. certification in Avett Quality Services. She previously worked at AHRC New York City as a Registered Nurse. Also, she has worked in New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where she works currently as a Registered Nurse. She does not have a CPHQ certification, but she has a Progressive Care Nursing (Adult) Certification issued by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. In addition, she possesses a Basic Cardiovascular Support for Healthcare providers certification. These are high-level certifications meaning that she has the capabilities of leading and guiding a team of nurses.
