Select a nursing clinical practice problem from the list of approved topics or obtain prior approval from your Instructor to use a clinical practice problem that is not on the approved list. Click here to view the list of approved topics for the EBP project.
Describe the nursing clinical practice problem and why the problem is significant to nursing practice. Include data, evidence, or statistics to demonstrate that the identified clinical practice problem is a priority.
Write a PICOT question to address the identified clinical practice problem.
Use the question templates for selected clinical foreground questions (Polit & Beck, 2018, Table 2.1, p. 31) to state the PICOT question.
Identify and label each component of the PICOT question.
Ensure the PICOT question describes the clinical practice problem, the proposed intervention, the comparison intervention, the outcome, and includes a timeframe.
Review the PICOT question video in the learning materials for this module as needed.
Search the literature to find one (1) quantitative (randomized control, or experimental, or quasi-experimental) study published in a peer-reviewed journal within the past five (5) years, that addresses the identified practice problem and supports the proposed intervention.
Summarize the research study by describing the research design, sample and setting, major variables (independent variable, dependent variable), major findings, and application of findings to the proposed practice problem and PICOT question. Cite the article using APA format.
Students may use research studies that are meta-analyses or systematic reviews to provide only background information to demonstrate the existence of the clinical practice problem or to show why the practice problem is a priority. Students may also use meta-analyses or systematic reviews to search for randomized control, experimental, or quasi-experimental research studies.

Nursing Interventions to Prevent Patient Falls
While looking through data on patient falls, one is shocked by the sheer danger that millions of patients in the world face from an issue that is preventable. In the U.S., the CDC (2017) reports that among the elderly population (those 65 and older), one in every four falls every year. The CDC continues to report that one in every five falls results in serious injuries, including head injuries and broken bones. The CDC also reports that “falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries” (2017). The medical cost of these falls also continues to increase with every passing year. But, can these falls be prevented and are there appropriate interventions for the same?
Without proper interventions, the elderly population could be in danger of suffering worse injuries because the CDC reports that “falling once doubles your chances of falling again” (2017). The statement above implies that the elderly population will continually suffer from a problem that can be prevented. But, what can healthcare professionals do to help reduce the instances of falls? One intervention that has been adopted is video monitoring. It involves the use of cameras to watch over the clients. In case of issues, signals are issued to the nurses and physicians on call to check on patients at risk of suffering a fall. In their study, Cournan, Fusco-Gessick, and Wright (2018) were in support of this intervention noting that it can indeed help reduce the rate of patient falls.
However, Mitchell et al. (2014) believe that a focused hourly rounding could be a better intervention against patient falls. Mitchell and colleagues’ proposal is focused on the 4 Ps, which include pain, position, prompted voiding, and placement of the patient. The researchers believe that a focus on these 4 Ps could “allow nurses to provide more responsive and uninterrupted care” (2014).
