The lesson plan on “donning sterile gloves” using the ASSURE Model targets the nursing students to determine their performance when donning the sterile gloves. Assessment is an ongoing process that requires collecting data on the learning objectives to evaluate students’ learning and where possible using educational technology, tools and techniques enhances learning (Bristol & Zerwekh, 2011). When using the scoring rubric for assessment it is important to consider the evaluation criteria and the quality rating where the important details are included (Truemper, 2004). It is important to don the sterile gloves to avoid transferring organisms that may cause infections. Prioritizing hand hygiene and choosing the correct size of gloves are equally important when learning the techniques of properly donning the sterile gloves. The sterile gloves come in different sizes and the students are expected to select those that fit them.
The ASSURE instructional model is preferred as it is a learner-centered approach where there is integration of technology and media when developing lesson plans. In the model, there is emphasis on the learners, stating the objectives and selecting the most appropriate media and materials to accomplish the learning objectives (Reyes & Oreste, 2017). The six major steps of the ASSURE Model are “Analyze the learner, State objectives, Select media, Utilize, Require students' participation, Evaluate and Revise” (Reyes & Oreste, 2017). The effective use of media during instructions is a top priority of the ASSURE Model and the lesson starts with a video presentation and then discussion of the techniques to don the sterile gloves.
Using the ASSURE Model the rubric was chosen to improve learning where there was emphasis on learner-centered strategies and ensuring that 5 phases of the model meet the learners needs, while there has been no evaluation and revision.
