Study Question: What associations exist between nutritional status and health outcomes?
(Kvamme, et al. 2011) sought to find out the relationship between malnutrition and mental health among elderly individuals. The study concluded that there is a strong association between the risk of malnutrition and impaired mental health among the elderly. After the results from the cross-sectional survey were adjusted for age, marital status, smoking, and education, the study uncovered that there was a positive associated between the risk of malnutrition and significant mental health issue. Additionally, the study showed that there was a positive association between subthreshold mental health symptoms according to SCL-10 score and mental health problems.
Similar studies have come to a similar conclusion that there is a relationship between mental health and malnutrition. For example, (Choda, et al. 2020) found that ‘consuming particular nutrients and foods, especially calcium and dairy products, may lead to better mental health in Japanese adults.’ Though the study did not clearly indicate that one leads to another, it showed that mental health issues, especially anxiety and depression, positively correlated with bad nutrition. It is likely that episodes of poor mental health exacerbated the symptoms or the severity of the mental condition. The body needs some nutrients to function optimally. Low zinc levels of a diet lacking in zinc, magnesium iron, vitamin D, omega -3 fatty acids are associated with decreased energy and bad moods. Thus, poor health has a direct effect on mental health.
(Kvamme, et al. 2011) also found out that people with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of less than 20. kg/m2 had a two to three higher prevalence of developing mental health symptoms. They also noted that individuals with a BMI of > 20. kg/m2 did not have a higher prevalence of developing mental healt...
