I have advanced in applying the knowledge acquired in regard to practitioner-patient relationship. The course has helped me in learning the value of developing positive relationships with patients (Rasheed et al., 2019). For example, rather than alarming patients with all the bad things that can happen when they are sick, I focus on the positive aspects. Giving that I treat patients with diabetes, I have learned to talk about the positives of losing weight, eating healthy, and increasing physical activity. The other way I have advanced in my practice is recognizing my strengths and weaknesses as a practitioner. Rasheed et al. (2019) note that developing self-reflection allows nurses to recognize their feelings, biases, strengths, and limitations. One weakness I had was not asking for help or support from peers and colleagues. However, I am slowly learning to work with others and recognize that getting help is not a sign of weakness. Working with other health professionals increases better patient outcomes.
My application of advanced health assessment has improved in that I have realized the importance of listening to the patient. Therapeutic communication is an important part of health assessment (Rasheed, 2015). While in the past I often focused on the physical assessment and the patient history, I have recognized the need of involving the patient to fully recognize their needs. For example, when assessing a diabetic patient from the Hispanic community, I try to assess the patient’s condition while incorporating culturally competent communication (Kaihlanen et al., 2019).
