Effective Approaches in Leadership and Management: Nurse Turnovers
Nurse turnover rates continue to increase even as the shortage of nurses becomes unbearable. At a time when the world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, losing nurses can cripple a healthcare organization. Provided herein is a description of the impact nurse turnover has on healthcare outcomes, the role of leaders in reducing nurse turnover, and the leadership style that could best help reduce nurse turnover.
Issue Description
Nurse turnover happens when a nurse decides to leave their position in a particular organization. Leaving their position could mean changing their profession, retiring from the nursing field, or choosing a different organization altogether. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the decision to leave a healthcare organization, nurse turnover greatly impacts the safety of patients. As the world continues to grapple with different diseases, the need for nurses continues to rise. As things stand, currently, the nursing profession is shorthanded. Haddad et al. (2020) note that nursing jobs will continue to increase through 2022. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also "projects that 11 million additional nurses are needed to avoid a further shortage" (Haddad et al., 2020). The above simply means that the nursing field is already short of the apt number of nurses needed to ensure enhanced patient outcomes. Therefore, turnovers are further making it difficult for the healthcare sector to operate at optimum levels.
One major effect of nurse turnover is that they lead to more turnovers. When one nurse leaves, their partners are forced to increase their workload, which introduces other issues, including burnout, sleep deprivation, stressed nursing ratios, and fatigue. The larger effect of these issues is that the healthcare quality is reduced. The Patient Safety Network or PSNet (2019) indicates that "there is good evidence of increased nursing errors when shits last longer than 12 hours, nurses work overtime, or nurses do not receive adequate rest breaks." These are all factors that emanate from high nurse turnover rates. Thus, the management of healthcare organizations needs to ensure that nurses are given the right remunerations, have conducive working environments, and great leadership. There need to be policies that protect nurses and offer them an environment that enhances their output.
Demonstration of Professional Standards of Practice
Professional standards of practice help to offer guidance on how nurses ought to conduct themselves while in their profession. The American Nurses Association developed several standards that continue to offer nurses and nurse leaders guidance on proper and effective conduct for better healthcare quality.
To help deal with the issue of nurse turnover, there is a need to employ the standard of collaboration. According to this standard, there is a need for nurses and nurse leaders to collaborate with other nurses and healthcare stakeholders, including healthcare consumers, to help enhance patient outcomes. This means that nurses need to collaborate with their leaders as well, as they try to find the perfec...
