Evidenced Based Practice (EBP) is an approach to working with consumers that emphasizes using scientific research (evidence) as the basis for interventions (practices) with consumers. Originally used in the medical and mental health fields, EBP has been adapted to the field of social work. However, it is just one approach, and there are controversies and disagreements over the method, including what constitutes valid evidence.
Read chapter 1 of the Plionos text, the Sexton article and additional material in this module’s media section.

Evidence-based practice individualizes the care of patients. The method allows for designing specific measures that will address predicted clinical changes in a particular patient's functioning (Sexton et al., 2011). EBP further reduces patient care costs and allowing medical professionals to enhance their expertise while caring for patients. Evidence-based practice has resulted in methods of care being based on the most credible available evidence. EBP has categorized expert opinion as only opinions rather than proven facts. EBP has also played a role in increasing the awareness of overdiagnosis. Furthermore, it has contributed to reforming medical professionalism and ethics, ensuring all methods are central to evidence-based practice. EBP is a voice for reforms since it showed some of the medical practices as inaccurate and inefficient.
