Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right that should be available to everyone, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. However, many individuals and families face barriers to accessing healthcare, particularly in underserved communities. Accordingly, this second module will continue on the case of the immigrant family who is suffering from a variety of health, social, and financial issues, to name a few. This article aims to assess the areas of greatest need in a community, with a focus on assisting a target family in accessing healthcare, as well as identifying the resources and strengths that can be utilized to address these areas.
Areas of Greatest Need
In the case of a non-English speaking immigrant family, the areas of greatest need may include access to affordable healthcare services, health education and resources, and management and treatment of chronic health conditions. The family may face additional challenges due to their limited English proficiency, low income, and lack of insurance. As a result, they may need help navigating the healthcare system and accessing the care they need.
To address these areas of need, the MAP-IT program can be implemented. The program's mission is to empower and support the target family in achieving optimal health and wellness by providing comprehensive education, resources, and access to affordable healthcare services. By mobilizing community organizations, healthcare providers, schools, local government agencies, businesses, and media outlets, the program can create a supportive and inclusive community environment that promotes health and wellness for all its members (Menzin et al., 2020).
Community organizations are one of the critical resources that can be tapped into to address the areas of greatest need. Local organizations such as community centers, faith-based organizations, and cultural organizations can help spread awareness about the importance of health and wellness and provide resources and support to the family (Phillips & Jenkins, 2010). As stated in the case, the family is an immigrant, which also increases the risks of social problems for the family. Nonetheless, studies show that collaboration with faith-based organizations can help immigrant families in adapting to the social circumstances of their environment (Ngin et al., 2020).
