Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Guideline Paper - Schizophrenia

Research Paper Instructions:

1. Introduction: Include an introduction paragraph and a thesis statement at the end of the introductory paragraph. Your thesis statement should be no longer than 1 sentence summarizing the purpose of the paper.1 / 1 point
2. Quantitative Literature: Describe the term quantitative research and how it can be applied to the Advanced Practice Nurse’s (APN’s) practice. Be sure to cite your references. DATA Collection: describe how and what quantitative data you would collect/analyze related to your POI. Example: questionnaire (how) given to nurses on how often they gave a pain medication by selecting frequency on a likert scale (data) 2/ 2 points.
3. Complete the Appraisal Tools and submit to Assignment area: This section (rubric #3) does not need to include any discussion in the paper. (A deduction of 5% will be taken if the wrong tool is selected).
Find 2 different types of quantitative articles/studies related to your POI (at least one-and ONLY one- of your studies should be a meta-analysis or systematic review. Then, critically appraise the 2 chosen articles selected by using the appraisal tools provided (in the link under Step by Step Directions), merge or attach separately the completed appraisal tools to your paper after the matrix. You must complete the tool by addressing each question or comment. Be sure to include the title of the study article on the top of the tool. Include comments for any “no”, “don’t know” or “n/a” answers.4 /4 points
4. Quantitative Meta-analysis or Systematic Review Study Article Discussion: Using the information from your appraisal tool and utilizing one of the Levels of Evidence AND Grades of Recommendation (tools that measure strength and quality of evidence) tools provided, discuss the following: (a) brief overview of study’s purpose and findings, (b) description of studies used in analysis, (c) is the analysis of the data accurate and representative of the question (is bias of any kind present) and (e) levels of evidence and (f) grade of recommendation. Be sure to cite the levels of evidence/grade of recommendation tools used to determine the strength and quality of the evidence. 5/5 points (Review Hall text p. 18-20; Murphy text Ch. 8; Polit text Ch. 29)
5. Quantitative single study article: discuss the following: (a) brief overview of the study’s purpose and findings, (b) study design and methods (c) scientific merit or rigor of the study (validity & reliability factors), (d.) level of evidence, and (e) grade of recommendation. Be sure to cite the levels of evidence/grade of recommendation tools used to determine your strength and quality of the evidence.5 /5 points (Hall p. 9-11; Murphy Ch. 9; Polit Ch. 8 & 10, p. 667-668).
6. Applicability to Practice and Future Research: Based on each appraisal of both studies, discuss how the study’s findings be used in practice or to plan for future research. What gaps have you identified? How does the level of evidence influence your decision to implement findings into practice in both studies? 3 /3 points
7. Conclusion: Provide a summary of the main points of the paper in 1 concluding paragraph. Remember that your conclusion paragraph should not contain any new information that was not presented elsewhere in the paper.1 / 1 point
8. Matrix/Appendix: Merge a thoroughly completed evidence matrix as an appendix. Be sure to appropriately refer your reader to the appendix in the narrative. All studies should be included in the matrix that are used as references in this paper. Bold or highlight the studies that were appraised. 4 /4 points
9. APA deductions or Scholarship Deductions: refer to the APA manual for any page numbers you may be referred to; see the Resources for You section of the course for additional APA assistance. Lack of scholarship up to 20% of the total point value (5 points) may be deducted for any of the following errors: incorrect submission format (not in a pdf, incorrect file name), APA errors, title or reference page errors, incorrect paraphrasing or plagiarism concerns, lack of clarity, conciseness in writing, grammar, spelling, over the page limit, and/or poor overall writing skills.

Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Guideline Paper- Schizophrenia Name Course Date 1. Introduction To make the diagnosis of Schizophrenia, criteria must be met that are the following according to the diagnostic manual (DSM-V), and researchers have looked into the effectiveness of different approaches to manage schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder is often grouped together with psychotic disorders (Velthorst et al., 2015). The quantitative research approach has been used in to minimize subjectivity in studies and research and to justify the validity of its conclusions. Quantitative research can be experimental research or nonexperimental research and in experimental research, the researchers actively introduce an intervention or treatment. On the contrary, in nonexperimental research the researchers do not intervene when collecting the data (Polit & Beck, 2016). This is a quantitative appraise of articles on the effectiveness of interventions to improve outcomes for people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders2. Quantitative Literature The first step when using quantitative research for the Advanced Practice Nurse’s (APN’s) practice is formulating and delimiting the problem, which is necessary to conceptualize the problem before determining the research design and collecting data (Polit & Beck, 2016). Studies and research on the effectiveness of interventions in people with schizophrenia compare outcome before and after using different treatments to determine, which are the most effective . The use of medication is the most common, but there is also patient non adherence and there is a need to explore how different approaches help improve adherence and their usefulness when medication does not lead to the expected outcomes (Chien et al., 2014). Quantitative research is a positivist approach where structured and elderly procedures are used to collect data that is then analyzed based using statistics and based on the empirical evidence (Polit& Beck, 2016). “Adherents of positivism assume that nature is basically ordered and regular and that an objective reality exists independent of human observation” (Polit& Beck, 2016, p.14). Using a questionnaire and survey to determine the effectiveness of schizophrenia treatment when psychosocial treatments is used together medication, changes from baseline and improved patient outcomes for the treated subjects would be considered to determine whether the treatment option is viable. 3.
