Introduction
The American education sector is suffering from an imbalance between the demand for teachers and the supply. This situation is escalated when considering the quality of teachers available and the unequal distribution of qualified teachers across the nation. Therefore, as the U.S. Department of Education's National Teacher and Principal tries to create counter policies, it is imperative to examine historical trends to determine the best course of action. This essay is an analysis of the historical perspectives and theories of teaching and learning in America. Consequently, it synthesizes the main points to examine what they stand for when taken as a single entity.
Perspective
Transmission; effective delivery of content encompasses two types of teachings, the didactic modes, employed by teacher-craftsmen, and the evocative modes, employed by teacher-artists (Ducharme & Ducharme, 2021). Didactic methods involve the passing on of traditional knowledge. Most of the early teachings in human history and early America was highly didactic. For instance, poets would recite poems and stories that few listeners leaned on for knowledge—The evocative method works by placing the students' responsibility for learning and understanding. For instance, a teacher gives the student the ability to a particular subject. It is up to the student to internalize the knowledge and develop ways to grow and expand the learning.
In Early America, the establishment of regular schools was the primary concern, and by the nineteenth century, every state had at least one. This social reform has a straight forward purpose involving teachers' preparation and assigning them to cities desperate for teachers. Teacher training was modelled after already established European institutions, consequently providing specific training. By 1940, the traditional schools had expanded and adopted into four-year state teachers' colleges or liberal arts colleges (Dierking, 2015). Consequently, the colleges and states university began to improve and develop teacher preparation programs. At that point, teaching became a more desirable occupation. The state programs snowballed as licenses requirements were often based on college-level coursework. As more secondary schools became accredited, so did the demand for teachers.
The programs to prepare the teachers has mainly remained consistent. They consist of general studies in arts and sciences; advances study in a specific discipline, teacher preparation component and field experiences. Consequently, teachers learn the foundations of teaching, including foundations of schooling and learning, teaching methodology, and practice teaching. Teacher education allows the students to practice teaching in institutional settings while still completing the preparation program. The experiences that occurred during the last year lasting approximately six to eight weeks. Study shows that the aspiring teacher's reaction is one of the essential aspects of the preparation programs. This is because this is the first time they spend time interacting with the young people they desire to teach as a career.
